GLASGOW completed their league fixtures by narrowly missing out on a point at Lakeside tonight – finishing their SGB Championship campaign on 40 points.
The Tigers already knew they’d qualified for the play-offs and so headed to the Arena Essex Raceway for the last-ever meeting at the venue with no pressure on their shoulders.
However, there was still a chance that if they won by enough of a margin, they could finish top.
That wasn’t to be as bad luck and a couple of errors put them 10 points behind in the end as the home team took a step closer to booking their place in the top four with the 50-40 win.
The club’s Peter Facenna wasn’t too disheartened and says the Tigers head into the play-offs in confident mood.
He said: “We gave it a good shot tonight – and we were perhaps unlucky not to take something more from the meeting.
“But a bit of bad luck and a couple of silly mistakes meant we fell behind and couldn’t claw the deficit back.
“It would have been nice to finish top but we’re confident after our wins over Edinburgh and Ipswich this week and we have plenty to look forward to in the play-offs.”
Elsewhere tonight, Workington secured their top-four place to join Peterborough and the Tigers in the end-of-season showdown.
Edinburgh suffered a shock 48-42 defeat at home to Berwick and although either of those sides could still qualify, they would require a major collapse from Lakeside, who just need a win from one of their two meetings tomorrow to secure the final berth.
Details of Glasgow’s next meeting will be confirmed following Sunday’s cut-off date for fixtures being completed.
