GB 33 V 57 Australia

Ashfield’s first senior international match since 1952 saw the Australian’s take an easy victory in front of a large crowd.
There were plenty of enthusiasm and noise before the start and an opening 4-2 from GB with Tai Woffinden breaking the track
record increased that even more.
Unfortunately that was as good as it got with the Holder brothers holding off attempts by Chris Harris and then Craig Cook
to take a 5-1 in heat 2.
Adam Ellis made a good start to win heat 3 but Dan Bewley was unable to do anything at the back.
At this stage there was only two in it but a devastating 14-4 burst in the next 3 heats by the visitors , took them out of sight.
GB managed to stop the rot with three successive drawn heats, Tai Woffinden winning two of them, although Craig Cook and Brady Kurtz
had a good battle in heat 8, with Chris Harris and Sam Masters likewise at the back, with the home man finally getting the better of
the Aussie on the last lap.

GB were struggling out of the starts and even Tai Woffinden barely made a gate all afternoon and when he was left for dead in heat 10,
the writing was on the wall for the home side.
They offered some relief in heat 11 when Cook and Dan Bewley both made the start but Bewley almost fell off the back of his bike on
the 4th bend, allowing Masters through. He drew level a couple of times with him during the race but had to settle for third.
Steve Worrall gated in heat 12 but was quickly passed by Chris Holder, although he did well to hold off a fierce challenge by Ty Proctor.
The Aussies then turned the screw with two 5-1s before Cook produced the move of the day, passing both Max Fricke and Chris Holder
with some great white line riding in heat 15.

Every visitor was paid for a heat win and Brady Kurtz was unbeaten in his 4 completed rides. For the home men, Tai Woffinden
started well but faded whilst Craig Cook went the opposite way. The rest struggled and maybe it was too soon for some of them.
With 5 of the 6 Aussies full time in the Premiership compared to the home side who have 5 in the Championship it was always
going to be a difficult task. No one expected it to be this easy for the Aussies but it showed why these teat matches are
important in building experience.
It’s fortunate Jason Doyle was missing or the score could’ve been bigger although GB will point to Robert Lambert’s
absence as a reason for the gulf in the sides.
Hopefully today’s meeting will mean a return of a proper test series next season giving a chance for more experience and bigger crowds.
