Glasgow Tigers 53 v 37 Scunthorpe Scorpions

Glasgow got their 2017 league challenge off to a good start, by taking a victory over a Scunthorpe side who were only 2 down with four to go.
With some of the Tigers team having had limited track time and the visitors with a match under their belts, this looked like a potential banana skin.
Early on the Scorpions looked sharper from the gate, with Fritz Wallner and Lewis Kerr winning their opening rides. This took them into a two point lead.
Glasgow levelled the scores with a heat four 4-2, with Jack Smith picking up his first point for the Tigers.
Ryan Douglas gated in heat 5 and both Tigers had a go at passing him but couldn’t get enough grip to pass and the scores remained level.
Dan Bewley then flew around the field in heat 6 followed by Aaron Summers to take Tigers into a four point lead which Richard Lawson maintained in heat 7. Scunthorpe had by this stage equalled their total of 19 that they scored last year!
Scunthorpe hit back with a heat 8 maximum to level the scores again before Richie Worrall took his first win, Nike Lunna taking third as the home side went ahead after heat 9.
Two drawn heats followed before Tom Perry joined Worrall at the front to open up a six point lead. That was swiftly increased to 10 through Lawson and Summers to win the meeting.
Lunna and Perry then ensured the Scorpions would leave empty handed with a 4-2, although Perry had been second for a couple of laps before Palm Toft passed him.
It was left to the Summers/Lawson duo to wrap up the meeting with another 5-1 and a paid maximum for captain Summers.

The Saturday night did seem to create a different atmosphere to an afternoon meeting with the lights adding to the drama. Rain during the week possibly made the track slicker than normal, which seemed to catch out the home side but the Tigers eventually took charge after their slow start. The heat leaders as expected did the bulk of the scoring but everyone else chipped in with vital points.
Scorpions nearly pulled off a shock bonus point as they erased their 2016 visit but they couldn’t get enough heat winners when it mattered and slumped in the last few heats.
Next week will see another hard match as the Newcastle Diamonds come looking for revenge for their cup final defeat.
