Glasgow Tigers 51 v 42 Newcastle Diamonds

Tigers took their second successive home win over a disappointing Newcastle side in an entertaining meeting. The Diamonds relied heavily on their top two of Steve Worrall and Robert Lambert but it was the Tigers who had too much strength in depth.

It was the latter who took heat 1 in a fast time as the heat was drawn.
Tigers were then looking to take advantage of a perceived weakness at reserve in heat 2. Tom Perry took an early lead and despite missing the start, Jack Smith took advantage of a Connor Coles mistake on lap two before doing likewise a lap later by passing Danny Phillips, who went too wide and fell, causing the chasing Coles to hit his machine. Both riders were OK to continue.
An easy home 5-1 in heat 3 looked as if it would be followed by another 4-2, after Richard Lawson dived up the inside of S Worrall on the second bend to lead. Smith who was comfortably third picked up too much grip on the 4th bend and came down hard, he walked off into the ambulance and was later withdrawn. Diamonds took advantage in the re-run with their own 4-2.
Heat 5 looked like a home maximum but Robert Lambert picked off R Worrall but Nike Lunna hung on for a superb win and an 8 point lead.
S Worrall passed Dan Bewley in heat 6 to limit the home side to a 4-2 before two successive drawn heats with Perry breaking down in both of them, kept it at 10.
This allowed Steve Worrall to take the b/w helmet against his brother and despite a valiant effort by Richie it was Steve who took the victory and a 6-3.
Tigers then all but wrapped the match up with a 5-1 in heat 10 with Aaron Summers’ brilliant outside pass of Rose on the 4th bend allowing him to join partner Bewley up front.
Another Perry stoppage in heat 11 meant another 3-3, before he finally got his machine working to pass Coles for another 4-2 in heat 12.
Diamonds gave themselves a chance of a point with a 5-1 in heat 13 from their top two after shocking gates from the home men but Lunna and Perry’s 4-2 in heat 14 finished the Diamonds off. Steve Worrall then took heat 15 to cut the deficit back to nine to make it seem closer than it actually was.
This was a much better meeting than last week with a good atmosphere and racing. The score flattered the Diamonds with Perry’s machine problems allowing them to stay in the hunt for a losing point longer than may have been the case. In fact three of their riders failed to beat a home man, whilst every Tiger was paid for a win.
Jack Smith had an encouraging paid win and it was unfortunate that he pulled out of the meeting as he looked like he would score a few more.
If it was the heat leaders who won the match last week, it was the turn of the second strings this week with both Lunna and Bewley having good nights.
It’s back to Sunday next week with the visit of Berwick although two away matches first will show how good this Tigers team is, as they look to go top of the league with a victory or two.
